About PSR
Pakistan Society for Rheumatology (PSR) is a pioneering platform established in 1995, aimed at advancing knowledge about rheumatic diseases in Pakistan and fostering further expertise in this field. It originated from the Pakistan Rheumatic Society, founded in Karachi in 1970 by a group of prominent doctors. Although these physicians lacked formal training in the field, they recognized the importance of representing Pakistan at international forums.
Initially, activities were limited to sporadic meetings in Karachi. However, individuals such as Dr. S.R.A. Kirmani and Dr. Samad Shera maintained optimism both within and outside Pakistan. In the early 1990s, a small group of rheumatologists who had trained in the UK and USA returned to Pakistan with a commitment to introduce advanced rheumatology education and care. With the support of the established medical community, they passed the torch to the new generation, leading to continuous progress.
The first set of office bearers included Dr. Azra Ali (President), Dr. Khurram Manzoor Chowdhry (President-elect), Dr. Abid Farooqi (General Secretary), Dr. Kamran Hameed (Joint Secretary), and Dr. Shahid Abbas (Finance Secretary). These representatives quickly gained international recognition for PSR, leading to its registration as the official national society for Pakistan within the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR).
Annual scientific meetings have been successfully held in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, attracting participation from renowned international rheumatologists. This has facilitated the development of respected opinion leaders within Pakistan. Within a short period, several original scientific research publications have emerged in leading rheumatology journals, enhancing Pakistan's credibility in the global rheumatology community.
